Meet Corey Young, Pellet Expert

Hi everyone! Today, I sat down with Corey Young, one of the Pellet Experts here at I got to ask Corey all about his experience working here and bonding with customers. AB:         Can you tell us how long you’ve been with

CY:          I’ve been with just shy of three years now.

AB:         And what do you do here?

CY:          I’m a customer service agent, and I assist customers with my Pellet Expertise *winning smile*.

AB:         What’s your favorite thing about working here?

CY:          I’d say my favorite thing about working here is that not only are we trying to grow ourselves as a company, but we’re also trying to grow the industry as a whole for biomass fuels.

AB:         Great. And what do you like about working with customers in particular?

CY:          Working with customers, I really like building relationships with them and helping them make the best choices for their fuel. Since they made the investment in their stove, I want to make sure they’re using the proper fuel as well.

AB:         Now have you ever had an experience with your customers, anything different or interesting or kind of crazy?

CY:          Actually, yes. About a year or so ago, we gave away free Fisher Cats tickets for customer appreciation day. And it just so happened to be my birthday, so they let me throw out the first pitch. And lucky to say it went all the way to the plate, even though I’m not that good at sports at all. But they cheered me on!

AB:         And do you have a customer that sticks out in your mind, either a favorite customer or someone that you’ve kind of shared a bond with?

CY:          Yeah, actually, when I first started here about three years ago, a woman came in, and she was very nice and we got to talking. Since then, she’s come back for bags, but back then, after I first met her, I ended up going into a store later that week. And it just so happened that she was working behind the counter. I didn’t see her when I walked in, until she screamed my name: “Corey! I love pellets!” and threw her arms up in the air. It was a good time, it was fun.

Turkey, turkey, turkey!

There’s nothing better than a fridge full of leftovers after Thanksgiving! We throw a Gobble Feast bash here at the office every year to celebrate the season, and I am thankful that wood pellets aren’t the only thing we’re experts at… we have some truly talented chefs on our team! So I asked around to see what the folks here do with their turkey leftovers, and here are some of our finest recipes.

Corey’s Homemade Turkey Soup

Making turkey soup can seem intimidating at first, but all that effort is well worth it by far!

This recipe is to taste and pretty forgiving, so don’t worry about exact measurements as you can cater to what you prefer. It makes a lot, so you can store the soup in your freezer and enjoy it throughout the winter season, by warming up with it and sitting next to your cozy pellet stove.

Corey's Homemade Turkey Soup

First things first, which is to make your homemade stock: Chop 2-3 large onions.  Remove all the meat from the remains of the turkey and set aside to refrigerate.  Place the carcass in a large stock pot and add water.  Add the onions as well as salt/garlic salt and pepper to taste.  Bring the water to a boil.  After that, reduce the temperature to a simmer.  Allow to simmer for several hours . . . the longer the better!

Once cooled, remove the carcass from the pot.  You will then need to strain the remains with a colander or cheese cloth.

Afterwards, you will need to chill your stock.  You can do so by leaving it outside, in a garage, or in the refrigerator overnight.  After chilled, you will need to remove the fat that has surfaced to the top.

Making your soup: At this time, you can then heat your stock back up.  Add the meat that you have set aside.  Then cut up your favorite vegetables.  The staple favorites are usually carrots & celery.  Feel free to get creative and use as much as you desire.  Once the vegetables start to soften, add several cups of orzo for your starch.  The orzo really thickens the soup, and is what my mother always used when she taught me how to create this wonderful homemade recipe.

Serve with salt a pepper to taste, but chances are you already made your turkey soup to perfection!

Audrey’s Turkey Chili

Every year, my mom makes a huge pot of chili with leftover turkey. She usually makes it up as she goes, so it’s a little different every time and this recipe is my closest guess. This chili is filled with healthy superfoods, and it is just stick-to-your ribs delicious at this time of year!

  • 2 C mixed, chopped veggies – onion, green pepper, and celery
  • 1 T minced garlic (or more to taste)
  • 2 T chili powder, 1 T cumin, 1 T oregano, salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 28-oz can stewed tomatoes
  • 2 16-oz cans light red kidney beans, rinsed & drained
  • 4 C shredded leftover turkey (white & dark meats)

Saute the veggies & garlic in olive oil over medium-high heat until they are soft. Add spices & tomatoes, and simmer until the tomatoes start to break up. Add the beans and turkey and heat through. Serve with shredded cheese, sour cream, tortilla chips, or chopped fresh chives – whatever you like!

Sure, are you ready for some…

I know, I know, you were thinking FOOTBALL! But what’s not to love – football games and a roaring pellet stove! One thing to keep in mind is that a clean stove is a happy stove, and a happy stove means a happy stove owner.

To answer your question: Yes, there is a short checklist of maintenance & cleaning tips you should go through before you start heating. If you have not already had your stove serviced – and I mean professionally cleaned – since last heating season, I would recommend that you do. Contact a local stove shop first to see if they can provide Annual Stove Service, and if they don’t, then contact a local Pellet Stove Service Technician.

What most people don’t realize is that they should have their stove professionally cleaned after 1-2 tons burned. The reality is most people have their stove serviced annually, which works for the majority of folks. However, pellet stove owners who burn 5-8 tons (or more!) a year should seriously consider having their stove serviced mid-season. This practice will keep your stove running efficiently, and it’ll keep you in better tune with your stove!

Just to give you an idea of what a Professional Cleaning involves, here’s a checklist from a Scott of Pellet Stove Cleaning.  This is a rather comprehensive list, as you can see (and of course, each checklist will vary by stove make and model):

  • Remove pellets; vacuum debris; inspect hopper, auger plate, pressure and/or latch switches; perform minor repairs as needed and refill pellets
  • Inspect auger and auger assembly; test for unobstructed rotation within the auger tube; clean & lubricate auger motor as needed
  • Combustion and Convection Blowers: access, clean, lubricate as needed
  • Visually inspect all wiring and terminals
  • Clean the entire fire chamber including: burn pot, ignition assembly, fire walls, draft chambers, exhaust ports and heat exchangers, etc…
  • Inspect all seals, heat switches, and vacuum sensors
  • Clean out exhaust pipes to the outside air
  • Complete cleaning of electronics from the rear panel of the appliance, and test electrical sensors and igniter for continuity and working order
  • Complete cleaning of the adjacent floor area and stove hearth, and glass on stove
  • Start up the stove to make sure all is working correctly

NH Senator Jeanne Shaheen visits!

New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen visited on Monday, and we couldn’t have been happier to host the Senator here at our Goffstown office! Sen. Shaheen met with leaders of the renewable energy industry, including our own president Jon Strimling, to discuss the future of wood pellet heating in America. Wood and wood pellet heating is growing quickly in this country, and here in the Northeast in particular. We’re proud to work with our government representatives to make sure wood pellets are affordable and sustainable, even as more and more people choose to heat with this green resource.

Why did you switch to wood pellet heat? Was it to support a local industry, or to save money on your heating bills? Or maybe to reduce your carbon footprint? Whatever the reason, sound off here!

Meet Joy, our pellet girl!

My name is Joy, and I’m the Fuel Quality Specialist here at 

So what exactly do I do, you might ask? Well, the heart of my job is making sure you have everything you need to keep your family warm. I follow up with our customers to make sure you are completely satisfied with your pellets… and if you have any feedback (kudos or criticisms), I’m also responsible for following through with our team and our manufacturers to make sure your voice is heard.

You might also be wondering why we need a Fuel Quality Specialist, since you’ve probably gathered by now that we pride ourselves on bringing our customers the absolute best quality pellets. I’m proud to say that our quality controls and customer service are the best in the business. But, the truth is – sometimes things happen. Sometimes a torn bag gets through our quality screening process, or a particular stove might not like a certain pellet. So, we have our Quality Guarantee, and it’s my job to make sure that guarantee works for you.

And if we’re doing something you like – if the teeny, tiny amount of ash from the new brand of pellets you tried from us this year blows you away, or if our driver was just the sweetest delivery man you’ve ever worked with – I love to hear the good stuff, too!

We always used to say, “you order, we deliver, done.”  But that’s not really 100% accurate: our customer service continues after you receive your delivery. Dear Darlene – advice for a customer with a single-car garage

This is my first year with the pellet stove, and my first order from  I just got my delivery last week (it was great, by the way – your driver was so nice).  Can I keep my pellets outside for now?  I don’t have room in my garage to store all three pallets.

Dear Single-Car,

Ah yes, we get this question a lot… Rest assured that it is safe to store your pellet fuel outside!  As a matter of fact, the fuel you are now looking at in your yard was once stored outside at the pellet mill where it was created.  The packaging you see on your fuel is weather resistant, but to be prudent, here is some advice to help keep your pellet fuel in ‘heat ready’ condition year round:

  • For those who can: Place skids in a high and dry area, away from irrigation
  • Check shroud for possible tears, cover with tarp regardless
  • Shovel around entire skid in winter
  • Check for tenants – you know, the cute furry kind like Alvin, Simon & Theodore!

But, there’s more – read on:


During the summer months make sure your fuel is delivered to an area in your yard or driveway that is free from any water pooling or flooding.  Direct water contact from below may cause water damage and render the pellets to its original form: sawdust (which is not pellet stove friendly). Also, be mindful of any irrigation heads or water spray paths as well – common sense right there.  In addition, should there be any trees overhead or nearby, we suggest placing a tarp over the skids.  This not only protects the packaging from constant exposure to the elements, but also keeps the leaves, dirt, and bird blessings from littering the shroud that protects your bags of fuel.  Check on your fuel once in a while, just to make sure the chipmunks haven’t developed a condo association !


Now your fuel has been outside for a couple of months and you are ready to fire up your stove! Carefully remove the protective wrap and slice the shroud on the top edge of the skid in order to slip the top bags out.  Leave the shroud on as long as you can.  Use the shroud to protect the bags and cover with the tarp.  Place a weighted object on top of the skid to keep the tarp in place.


Shovel a path to your fuel and shovel around the entire skid.  This effort will keep the snow off your fuel and help prevent any water and/or ice damage.  Continue to use the shroud and tarp to protect your fuel from snow and ice.


You’ve been warm and toasty all winter, and now it’s time for spring cleaning!  If you have loose bags left, find a spot in the garage or keep them outside, just protect them from the elements – as described in the seasons above.  Empty your stove’s hopper and keep an eye out for Spring Buy Pellet Fuel Specials!
